The supermarket giant has confirmed it would be taking effect soon

Tesco has issued a significant announcement impacting over 300 of its branches. Today (Friday, May 22), the supermarket giant revealed it was reintroducing its Kids Eat Free initiative.

The scheme will run throughout the May half term, though weekends are excluded. It means Tesco — Britain’s biggest supermarket chain — will provide one complimentary Kids Hot Meal Deal, Kids Breakfast or Kids Pick ‘n’ Mix deal with any adult menu purchase when shoppers scan their Tesco Clubcard.

The promotion extends to multiple meals, as it is providing a free Kids meal with every item bought from the adult menu, meaning families with several children can take advantage. For instance, an adult ordering a toastie, a piece of fruit and a coffee can claim three Kids meals at no cost.

Claire De Silva, head of communities at Tesco, said the initiative was hoped to offer some relief to hard-stretched parents during the holidays.

Ms De Silva said: “We know that household budgets can be really stretched over school holidays, so offering free meals to children during this time is just one of the ways we can support families.

“Kids Eat Free is just one of the many ways that Tesco is helping families spend less this half-term. We’re committed to delivering great value to all Tesco customers through Aldi Price Match, Clubcard Prices and Everyday Low Prices.”

The move follows Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves unveiling a raft of measures designed to make holidays more accessible for parents on Thursday (May 21). Family tickets at a wide range of attractions, including theme parks, zoos and museums, are set to become more affordable following a VAT reduction. The cut will also extend to children’s admission at cinemas, soft play centres and theatres, along with children’s meals at restaurants and cafés.

She further revealed that under-16s in England will benefit from free bus travel in August, alongside reductions in import duties on certain staple foods as part of a ‘Great British Summer Savings’ campaign.
