Thanjavur: Farmers of Thanjavur have appealed to PWD officials to release water into the branch canals of rivers so that they may take up samba cultivation.
Speaking at the revenue divisional-level farmers grievances day meeting here on Wednesday, they said water had reached the tail-end areas of the main rivers after release from Grand Anicut. Now, water should be released into the branch canals they said.
They also said water should be stored in all lakes, tanks and ponds.
Other demands included asking the government procure paddy with moisture content up to 22 per cent, stopping the felling of palmyrah trees, procuring 75 bags of paddy per acre at the DPCs without restricting it to 50 bags per acre, supplying 3-phase electricity to agriculture pumpsets without interruption, etc.
Ramesh of Vellaperambur demanded release of water into the Pillaivaikkal and Ananda Cauvery branches of the Vennar. V. Jeevakumar of Budalur said the turn system of water release should be withdrawn. N.V. Kannan demanded release of water into the Uyyakondan extension canal and New Kattalai Mettu canal.
