Universal Pictures’ The Odyssey, distributed in India by Warner Bros Pictures India, has become the first film in the country to cross Rs 100 crore in box office collections from IMAX screens alone, setting a new benchmark for both Hollywood and Indian cinema.
The film crossed the milestone on September 16, 2026, in its ninth week of release. IMAX screenings contributed approximately 43 per cent of its total India gross, despite accounting for just over one per cent of the film’s total screen count nationwide.
The achievement also makes The Odyssey the highest-grossing IMAX release in Indian cinema history, surpassing the previous record held by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
To mark the milestone, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros Pictures India and IMAX are bringing the film back to theatres through an exclusive IMAX re-release beginning October 9, offering audiences another opportunity to experience it on the format in which it was filmed.
Denzil Dias, who leads Universal Pictures International’s theatrical distribution in India, said the achievement reflected audiences’ continued preference for experiencing the film in IMAX.
“A result like this is not about one week or one number, it is a film finding its audience in the format it was built for, again and again, over ten weeks,” Dias said. He added that IMAX alone crossing Rs 100 crore was significant, given that such a figure was generally associated with a film’s entire theatrical run.
Giovanni Dolci, chief commercial officer at IMAX, said Nolan had shot The Odyssey entirely with IMAX film cameras, adding that the film’s performance reflected the director’s vision and the enthusiasm of Indian moviegoers.
“This historic run reflects the power of Nolan’s vision, the passion of Indian moviegoers, and the commitment of Universal Pictures, Warner Bros Pictures India and our exhibition partners to bringing the film to audiences in IMAX,” Dolci said.
Gautam Dutta, CEO – Revenue and Operations at PVR INOX Ltd, said the response to the film demonstrated audiences’ willingness to seek out theatrical experiences suited to a film’s scale.
He described the Rs 100-crore IMAX milestone as a significant moment for the film, the format and the cinema industry.
Devang Sampat, managing director of Cinépolis India, said the film’s sustained performance showed that audiences had continued to choose IMAX screenings over its nine-week run. He added that the theatrical experience remained central to how cinema operators were developing their offerings.
With its record-breaking IMAX collections, The Odyssey has highlighted the contribution of premium large-format screenings to a film’s box office performance in India. Its exclusive re-release is expected to give audiences another opportunity to watch the film on IMAX screens across the country.
