Samantha Morton has admitted she felt “sad” after being fired from a huge film 10 years ago. The British actress, 49, who stars in box office blockbuster, The Odyssey, has a string of impressive credits on her CV, including The Whale and Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them.
In 2013, the award-winning actress thought she had been cast in another huge film, sci-fi flick, Her. However, she says she was hurt to find out she had later been replaced by Hollywood star, Scarlett Johansson.
Samantha had recorded the part of artificial intelligence operating system, ‘Samantha’, for Spike Jonze’s film, only for the director to re-cast the role in post-production.
Scarlett was hired to re-record the dialogue, with Samantha admitting she wished she’d been given another chance to do her recording.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, she said: “I have to say that it’s every director’s prerogative in regard to the final cut of the film.
“For any job, you’re never guaranteed to be in it in the end. But with that, I was surprised. A little sad would be an understatement.”
Samantha admits that Scarlett has a “beautiful voice”, but the Brit wishes she had been able to record the part in an American accent.
Speaking about the Lost In Translation star who replaced her, she said: “She’s incredibly evocative. I got it, but I was sad. It does hurt when you’re fired from something.”
Explaining that she would have liked to re-record her part, she said: “What I would have wished for was another chance in a booth to do an American accent. But Scarlett Johansson – I mean, come on.”
While shooting the movie, Samantha had appeared alongside leading man Joaquin Phoenix, and she recalls it was “really special” working with the 51-year-old actor.
She said: “The time I had on set with Joaquin [Phoenix], working with Spike on the script and finding Samantha, and all the work that we did was really special.
“We did some mad stuff,’ the 49-year-old continued. They designed and built a booth for me to record all my sound. I would be in this black, padded phone box, or I’d be in the trunk of a car.”
Revealing that her version of Samantha is very different from Scarlett’, she concluded: “I think my version of Samantha was very different. She’s English.”
The near-future film, which asks what it means to love, follows Theodore Twombly (Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha – played by Scarlett – an artificially intelligent operating system personified through a female voice.
It also features Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pratt, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig.
