Christopher Nolan’s much-awaited epic, The Odyssey, is already grabbing a lot of attention before its release. The high demand for tickets to the fantasy film, scheduled to release on July 17, 2026, pushed ticketing websites almost to the breaking point. Many eager fans of the Oscar-winning director have been complaining about long wait times to get a ticket.

Ticket prices for The Odyssey surged to USD 1000

Amid the frenzy, tickets to see The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm surged to USD 500 to USD 1000 on eBay with shows in New York, Texas, Florida and Arizona. The pricey tickets are primarily for IMAX 70mm screening. IMAX delivers triple the resolution of standard 35mm film and is several times larger than normal screens. Additionally, The Odyssey is the first feature film to be entirely shot on an IMAX camera. Since maverick Christopher Nolan advocates IMAX, he often encourages audiences to see his films in that format.

Moviegoers flooded the website for tickets

As per the latest reports, tickets for the fantasy epic went live on AMC at 12 p.m. However, the queue was paused by AMC within the first half hour of the drop as people flooded the website. Soon after the tickets went live, people reported problems while purchasing the ticket, with one user reporting an error with the purchase process. Taking to social media to voice their grievances, a user wrote:

“AMC should be ashamed by today. I spent almost 2 hours trying to book tickets for IMAX 70mm tickets for ‘The Odyssey,’ but every time I reached the select ticket stage, the site would never let me progress and constantly hit me with ‘an error occurred.”

What is the craze about The Odyssey?

Christopher Nolan is a maverick who never fails to surprise his audience. The Odyssey is expected to generate hundreds of millions of dollars, as his last film, Oppenheimer, scored USD 975 million at the global box office. After Oppenheimer won seven Oscars on 13 nominations in 2024, The Odyssey is also expected to be up as a frontrunner for the 2027 Academy Awards.

The film will be based on Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, written around the 8th century BCE. The poem revolves around the King of Ithaca, Odysseus, whose journey back home after the Trojan War was filled with challenges. In his long journey, Odysseus will encounter negative forces, including Polyphemus the Cyclops, Sirens, Calypso and the witch goddess, Circe. These encounters will delay his reunion with his wife, Penelope, who was waiting for him.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey thrives on multiple perspectives and characters

One of the biggest reasons why The Odyssey has a huge edge over all of Christopher Nolan’s films is due to the introduction of multiple gods, warriors, monsters, and mortals. People familiar with Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey, cannot wait to witness Telemachus’ parallel arc, rival kings, and mythic figures in Nolan’s larger-than-life cinema. Beyond the grand monsters, Gods, and legendary battles between kings and their armies, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will spotlight the costs of war and survival. According to multiple reports, the magnitude of The Odyssey will be even greater than that of Dunkirk and Oppenheimer.
