Samantha Morton has revealed that her sister has tragically died just months after the siblings lost their father, while she was still processing the ‘trauma’ of his death
The Odyssey’s Samantha Morton has announced the death of her sister. In a new interview, the actress, 49, confirmed that her sister died earlier this year, just months after their father.
Samantha, one of nine siblings, expressed that at the time of her sister’s death, she was still dealing with the coroners and the “trauma” following the death of her dad. Her biological father had spent time in prison throughout his life.
Her sister died in April earlier this year, aged just 53. “My relationship with my past changes as I age and my children age, but things keep happening,” she said.
Samantha went on to add: “I sadly lost my sister on April 22 this year; she was 53. I am still dealing with the coroners and the trauma. I lost my real father 18 months ago. Trauma. So the past is always with me, and I’m not saying I’m not going to be all right next week, but every day I wake, say a prayer and say ‘Please help me’.”
Speaking to The Sunday Times, she went on to add: “Someone told me I was resilient when I was younger, but sometimes you’ve got no choice other than to be resilient because if you’re not, you’re dead.”
During her younger years, Samantha spent time in foster care away from her siblings after her parents separated when she was just two years old. In a previous interview, the actress said she had been “saved” by acting after seeing Ken Loach’s Kes while at school, which encouraged her to pursue a career in the arts.
Just two years ago, while receiving her BAFTA Fellowship, she dedicated the award to “every child in care, or who has been in care and who didn’t survive.” She is also the mastermind behind the BAFTA-winning drama The Unloved, which focuses on a girl growing up in care.
Following her parents’ split, Samantha lived with her father while her mother started another relationship. But aged just eight, she was placed with multiple foster families, with her and her siblings being “passed” around like an “unwanted parcel”.
Over the years, Samantha has been extremely vocal about the care system and children’s rights, saying that many actors “won’t talk about their own personal experience.” Instead, she continually uses her platform to highlight her own experience, as “you never know who’s reading that story”.
Speaking in December last year, she said: “I feel that I’m allowed an opinion as an actor because I have experience of these things. Everyone’s called a celebrity now. I don’t feel like [one], but people don’t want celebrities. They’re fed up with being told what to do by people standing on their soapboxes.
“But I come at it from a different angle — from experience and compassion and a desire to highlight and educate, not finger-wag and tell people what they need to do or believe.”
