A new podcast series will get fans behind the scenes of the new Rolling Stones album, Foreign Tongues

You can’t always get what you want – but you can get Mick Jagger performing at his peak as long as he is wearing a black T-shirt.

The Rolling Stones have launched their own podcast series to promote new album Foreign Tongues.

Speaking about making the LP, producer Andrew Watt says: “If the jumper comes off, it’s a good sign. It means things are starting to go well. Then when the shirts off and he’s in the black T-shirt, and the veins are coming through every part of his body, you have full blown Jagger.”

Jagger himself insists one thing that has helped the band focus is a new way of working on both Foreign Tongues and the previous album Hackney Diamonds.

Their producer Watt prefers to work in short bursts in the studio and this enables the band to create an LP in weeks rather than months or even years which was the case in the past.

Jagger explained: “We know what we are doing and we know how to do it. And that worked, we are only going to spend X amount of weeks in the studio all together. So it’s not going to be long, it’s going to be hard, but it’s not long. So before you know what you’re doing, you’ll be done and you’ll be overdubbing or you’ll be doing nothing. So we’re a bit clearer about the process.

“The Rolling Stones don’t need laid back producers because they’ll be in the studio and never produce anything for 18 years. This is much faster, this is another way of doing it.”

In a future episode of the podcast, The Cure’s Robert Smith will also speak about how he ended up being on the album. He only intended to go for a beer with producer Watt, but after some dutch courage recording some bits which appear on two tracks.

“I just started playing and one thing led to another,” Smith modestly says.

Jagger liked what he heard when he returned to the studios the next day. Smith’s efforts ended up on the song Divine Interventions and he also plays synth on Never Wanna Lose You.

The band have scored eight Number 1 singles and twelve Number 1 albums with Foreign Tongues set to hit the charts next month when it is released on July 10, following the Grammy-winning success of 2023’s Hackney Diamonds and the band’s 2024 North American tour.

However, there are no plans for The Rolling Stones to hit the road this year and even a tour in 2027 is not definitely happening.

Keith Richards thinks the Rolling Stones are more likely to stage a residency than go on a full tour. The 82-year-old guitarist admitted he has suffered “some wear and tear” from the Paint it Black group’s huge stadium shows over the years and less travelling could be a good solution.

In an interview with Uncut magazine, he said: “I don’t know if tours are possible. It’s the travelling that takes it out of you. I do see the possibility of us doing a residency somewhere. Wherever it is, London, New York, Paris, anywhere. I’ll play Rome!

“But I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to throw some shows together in a new format.”

Frontman Mick Jagger is definitely still keen to play live. He told Mojo magazine: “I’m a performer. If you’re not performing what are you going to do? I want to play big shows.”
