A brief recap of what led to the big reveal

Based on Leonie Swann’s Three Bags Full, the film follows a detective-story loving flock of sheep who are shocked to discover that their beloved shepherd has died. After George is mysteriously found dead in his meadow, local police initially dismiss the case as a heart attack. However, his clever sheep, especially ‘Lily’ and ‘Mopple’, begin suspecting something far more sinister, thanks to their knowledge of murder mysteries from the stories George used to read to them.

Authorities soon discover that it was not a heart attack at all; he was poisoned. Thus begins a full-blown murder investigation, and the sheep take it upon themselves to find the killer. Initially, the suspicion falls upon George’s estranged daughter, ‘Rebecca Hampstead’ (Molly Gordon), after it is revealed that she inherited the shepherd’s fortune, along with the meadow, shortly before his death. Things take a turn for worse when authorities discover her bracelet near the crime scene, and Rebecca admits she secretly met her dad the night he died. So, could she be the killer?

While Rebecca becomes the prime suspect in George’s murder, reporter ‘Elliot Matthews’ (Nicholas Galitzine) remains deeply invested in helping solve the case. As the story moves forward, the sheep uncover some disturbing truths about George’s hidden family past and the ‘Caleb’s (Tosin Cole) sheep farm. Things take a shocking turn with a tiny detail that strikes Lily, i.e., the strange green stain on George’s hand. Turns out the real killer had been there all along, hiding in plain sight, and it wasn’t who one would have expected.

Who killed George in The Sheep Detectives?

The film eventually reveals that the real killer was not any family member, but an outsider. It was none other than ‘Elliot Matthews’, the young reporter who had been “helping” in the murder investigation. Well, that’s not the only surprise: Elliot is actually George’s son, who was operating under a fake identity. And it is only thanks to the witty sheep that the real culprit is unmasked.

Throughout the movie, Elliot appears as someone who is deeply invested in solving George’s murder and is extremely helpful when working alongside the local police officer, ‘Tim Derry’ (Nicholas Braun). While Elliot Matthews was an alias, his real name is Peter Van Vuren, George’s estranged son, who secretly travelled to England after learning about his father’s fortune and inheritance plans.

After discovering that George had only recently updated his will to leave the meadow and all his fortune to Rebecca rather than his son, Peter decided to usurp it all. Using his fake identity as Elliot, he met George and poisoned him in a private meeting. Then he mixed with the investogators to frame Rebecca for the shepherd’s murder.

How the sheep detectives solve their shepherd’s murder, and the mystery of the ‘ghost’

The biggest clue lies in the strange green substance found on George’s hand after his death. Earlier in the film, George can be seen handling sheep medicine that is blue in color. However, when his body was discovered, his hand had a green stain. By the climax, Lily the sheep realises that George could only have ended up with green on his hand if he had already touched the blue medicine before grabbing something yellow. That ‘something yellow’ turns out to be Elliot’s dyed blond hair. The revelation finally helps Tim connect the dots and realise Elliot was physically present with George during the murder.

After George’s death, the winter lamb claimed to see a ghostly apparition of George standing over his body. While the rest of the flock initially dismisses the story, they eventually realise that the lamb had actually seen Elliot, who resembled George enough in the darkness to be mistaken for him, or his “ghost.”

How does The Sheep Detectives end?

The film ends with Lily, Mopple, and the winter lamb escaping Caleb’s dangerous sheep farm, as they race to town to stop Rebecca from being wrongly imprisoned for her dad’s murder. The winter lamb, clever as he is, recreates the blue-and-yellow clue using paint inside the police station, and Officer Tim finally understands what happened. He publicly calls Elliot out. Though Elliot immediately attempts to flee, he is captured before he could escape town. After Rebecca is released, she has a change of heart and decides not to sell George’s meadow. Instead, she chooses to care for the sheep herself and continue her father’s legacy.

The ending delivers a hauntingly emotional moment when Lily finally accepts that sheep do not actually “turn into clouds” after death. Instead of forgetting George and Sebastian, the flock learns to honour them through memory and love. Perhaps the most tear-jerking moment comes in the film’s final scene, when Lily gives the winter lamb a name: George.
