We all love a good snack – one that tastes as good as it satisfies, and a recent study has exposed some snacking secrets that may (or may not) surprise you.
The study, commissioned by Australian Macadamias, reveals two-thirds of Australians admit to hiding their favourite snacks from family members, proving the adage, “a snack in the hand is worth two in the pantry”.
And when it comes to snacks worth keeping to yourself, Australian macadamias certainly fit the bill. With their rich, buttery flavour and satisfying crunch, these native Australian nuts make even the simplest snacking moment something to savour.
The research tells us partners and children are most likely to be kept in the dark, with 27 per cent of Aussies keeping a secret stash from them. 21 per cent even resort to shifting their snacks from room to room to throw their families off the scent. We also learn that more than a quarter of Aussies have wolfed down a snack before someone else could claim a bite, and 23 per cent have finished a snack in the car before reaching home.
Those confessions say a lot about the value we place on tasty snacks, because a snack worth hiding is probably one worth keeping on hand.

Why we hide the good stuff
Dodgy behaviour aside, the question still stands: Why do we hide our snacks? The answer lies in the taste, and sometimes good taste is just too good to share. Nearly one-third of the Australians admit to buying snacks they specifically don’t want to share. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound!
But when you think about it, it makes sense. When a snack has the perfect combination of taste, texture and convenience it’s easy to see why people want to keep it to themselves.
While some snacks might be worth hiding, Australians aren’t necessarily saving their favourites for a special occasion. In fact, nearly half enjoy special snacks every day, compared to just 23 per cent who save them for a special occasion.
It’s a finding that speaks to the way Australians enjoy food. Good taste doesn’t need to be reserved for celebrations or weekends. Whether it’s a mid-morning break, an afternoon pick-me-up or something delicious on the go, everyday moments deserve good taste too. Enter the macadamia.
Buttery, creamy and made for everyday
Though snacking has become more complex, with pantry and supermarket options competing for attention, Australian-grown macadamias offer great taste bundled in simplicity. Native to Australia and grown by Australian farmers, the humble nut’s taste profile covers everything people crave in one satisfying bite: buttery flavour, creamy texture and a crunch to finish the experience.
Whether it’s a handful at your desk to lift a mid-morning slump, a small bag in the car to sate you on the go, or a few nuts during that pesky 3pm snack attack, macadamias are a simple signal of good taste for Aussies who value quality, flavour and goodness in everyday moments. In today’s busy world, it’s the small pleasures that get us through the day, and macadamias fit that bill to a tee.
Australian Macadamias chief executive, Ben Baldwin, understands the urge to keep a favourite snack close.
“I must admit, I’ve hidden my fair share of snacks in my time, but Australian macadamias are simply too good not to share,” he says. “Australians appreciate great taste, and it’s no surprise that we’re finding ways to enjoy our favourite flavours in everyday moments.”
The research data forms part of You’ve Got Good Taste, a national campaign from Australian Macadamias that celebrates the role of macadamias in everyday snacking moments. Australian macadamias are widely available in retail stores across the country, and you can identify them by the country-of-origin information on the packaging.
Baldwin concludes, “Good taste doesn’t have to be saved for special occasions. With their delicious buttery flavour, satisfying crunch and natural nutrition, Australian macadamias are a great addition to everyday snack boxes, whether you’re enjoying a handful on the go or sharing a bowl with friends.”
