The Mets have starting pitching pieces, but that alone doesn’t make a rotation.
It’s a theme that has followed David Stearns in his first three offseasons leading the Mets front office, and this winter and beyond (depending on the length of the anticipated lockout) should be no different for the team’s president of baseball operations.
Freddy Peralta could have made life easier for Stearns by pitching to the level that was expected when the Mets acquired him in January. Then, the likelihood of Peralta returning on a free agent contract might have mitigated much of the concern about who will lead this Mets rotation next season. But Peralta flopped in his stint with the team and was traded in August.
So, with free agency set to begin Monday, there is greater uncertainty.
