When Akhil Iyer and Shriya Narayan moved away from Bengaluru after their marriage, they found themselves missing a familiar comfort from home. It was not something elaborate, but a simple plate of hot, buttery Davangere-style dosa that reminded them of their childhood.
The couple searched across Mumbai for a dosa that matched the flavours they remembered, but nothing felt the same. Instead of giving up, they decided to bring that taste to the city themselves. The couple left their well-paying jobs and stepped into the food business, despite having no prior experience in the industry.
They began with a small 12-seater cafe in Bandra, with a definite aim to serve authentic dosas that carried the same taste and warmth they had grown up with.
Building a taste that took them back home
Creating that perfect dosa was not an overnight process. The couple spent months working on the batter, trying different methods and refining the recipe. They experimented with chutneys, faced failures, and kept improving until they achieved the flavour they wanted. To stay true to the traditional preparation, they even sourced cast iron pans from Karnataka.
With limited money and every decision carefully planned, Akhil and Shriya built their cafe step by step. Their focus was simple. They did not want to add unnecessary variations or change the dish. They wanted to serve authentic Davangere-style benne dosa, crisp on the outside, soft inside, and finished with generous ghee.
Their efforts soon started drawing attention. People came not just for the food but for the feeling it brought back. A meal that reminded many customers of family kitchens, hometowns, and old memories became the cafe’s identity.
Today, their cafe serves more than 800 dosas every day and has grown into a successful venture, reportedly generating Rs 1 crore in monthly revenue. Their journey received wider attention when Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma visited them. Anushka shared that the dosa brought back memories of her childhood.
For the duo, the success has always been about more than numbers. They started with a craving for something familiar and ended up creating a place where many others could find a taste of home.
