The World Series’ end ushered in what may be an endless winter for baseball

This is always the most wistful of all days in a baseball burg like ours, the day after baseball season officially ends, when we can no longer talk ourselves into squeezing any more hours out of the summer. It is especially difficult when morning breaks as this Thursday morning does, full of sunlight and just a whisper of warmth, a hint of heat.

If you don’t look too closely at the trees, which are either full of the proof of autumn or barren of the evidence of summer, you can almost believe it is spring instead, with all of the hope that season brings. And if it is spring, then surely there may be a baseball game to be played somewhere in our town.

But then you make the pilgrimage, first to The Bronx and then on into Queens, you pass the empty husk of Yankee Stadium on the left as you swing down the Major Deegan, and then on the other side of the RFK Bridge, on the other side of LaGuardia Airport, is the quiet fortress of Citi Field. Plenty of work is being done inside these buildings, and on the streets surrounding them.

There’s just no baseball games scheduled today.
