Jane Wickline is a polarizing cast member on Saturday Night Live. On the show for two seasons, the comedian has several threads dedicated to her on the SNL subreddit arguing over her sense of humor. It’s a monthly conversation at this point. Wickline can often be seen in the background of sketches or performing a song via desk appearance on Weekend Update.
She’s rarely helming a sketch, which leaves those participating in the frequent Reddit debates to mostly go back and forth about her Update songs. Those performances are a very specific vein of comedy—clever and well written, but with an awkward and dry delivery that doesn’t win everyone over.
Someone who Wickline didn’t appeal to posted on Reddit nine months ago: “Can we all agree it’s time to let Jane Wickline go?”
Don’t Miss
Yet another post on Reddit from last month said: “Something seems off about Jane Wickline.”
On the other hand, there are plenty of Wickline defenders, too. “You can think she’s not funny and move on,” one Redditor wrote. “I personally find her style of comedy hilarious. Comedy is subjective and she was cast for a reason. I think her delivery and jokes are getting better as well.”
The problem with all of this back and forth is that there’s little to debate about beyond those controversial Wickline Update performances. Wickline is being underutilized in the show—and who knows why that is—but until she gets more non-Update appearances, the debates about her place on the show will continue to revolve around her trolley problem song.
When you search Wickline’s name on Youtube, the first four videos are her Weekend Update appearances. Then, there’s the “Boys Podcast” sketch, where she is part of an ensemble including Sabrina Carpenter, Chloe Fineman, and Veronika Slowikowska. Then, there’s more Update appearances.
Beyond her original songs, Wickline’s other main claim to fame on SNL is starring alongside Marcello Hernandez for the “The Couple You Can’t Believe Are Together” Update desk appearance. But for Episodes 5 and 6, where Wickline didn’t have anything on Update, she averaged about one minute of screen time for each episode. Naturally, some stetches of the show will feature more or less of a given cast member, but after two seasons, Wickline needs the opportunity to make her mark in sketches, too.
But one thing is certain. One minute per episode is simply not enough time to form an opinion on a cast member, positive or negative.
