This Mitch Hedberg Wannabe Needs To Go

My social media video feeds were full of comedian Mitch Hedberg this week … wait a minute, that’s not the hilarious Hedberg. It’s aspiring comic Keegan Carmychael, cosplaying as the stoner stand-up legend.

Carmychael tried out his Hedberg-Lite act on Kill Tony earlier this fall and … it didn’t go well. Tony Hinchcliffe, in particular, gave serious side-eye throughout Carmychael’s short set. “Keegan, let’s just jump right into what literally 100% of the people in the room are thinking,” Hinchcliffe said. “Are you aware that in every single way you’re doing a Mitch Hedberg impression?”

People tell him that all the time, Carmychael replied. But, incredibly, the comic insisted this was his real-life personality. “Yeah, I don’t know what you want me to tell you,” he stammered.

Sure, kid. “So, you were like this, and that was your sense of humor,” said Hinchliffe. “And then you saw Mitch Hedberg and you’re like, ‘Whoa, what are the odds?’” Carmychael ripped off everything — the look, the delivery, the joke style. Was he a Hedberg superfan?

Nope, says Carmychael. His favorite is Demetri Martin.

Hoo boy. Hinchcliffe kept digging for the real guy hiding beneath that Hedberg Halloween costume. “Keegan, who are you in real life? What do you really like?”

Carmychael kept doing his Hedberg act. “Just a couple of beers in the park and read a book, man.” Was he being serious? Is there some universe in which this guy doesn’t know he’s imitating Hedberg?

If nothing else, other comics have to hate a guy who’s just doing a Hedberg impression. Carmychael admitted that was the case. “Some people wait outside the club to say shit to me,” he admitted. But despite all the criticism, he wouldn’t cop to the Hedberg influence, despite doing a Xerox of the comic’s act. “Dude, Dimitri Martin was my guy!”

“That’s funny and all,” said Hinchcliffe, not laughing. “But seriously, we’re all witnessing a Mitch Hedberg impression.”

Somehow, Carmychael is getting away with it so far. He’s got more than 16,000 followers on Instagram — not an astronomical number, but enough to make you question the judgment of people who are buying this comedy karaoke act.

Give credit to the Kill Tony panel for calling the guy out. “It’s kind of blasphemous what he’s doing,” noted Hinchcliffe.

“It’s awful,” agreed Brian Redban. “He has good jokes. He could just do them different, like his own self, instead of literally acting.”

“It’s too bad that they don’t need Mitch Hedberg impersonators at kids’ parties,” said comic Duncan Trussell.

“Looking like him is kind of crazy, too,” said Hinchcliffe. “Anyway, we have any sage? Can we sage the room? Never saged the Kill Tony stage before, but that one kind of creeped me out.”

We’re all kind of creeped out. Can you guys sage my Instagram Reels to ward off any Carmychael spirits while you’re at it?
