This article contains spoilers for “Treehouse of Horror XXXVI.”

The least loquacious member of the Simpson family is obviously Maggie, the adorable baby/attempted murderer.

But The Simpsons has, on occasion, featured scenes in which Maggie actually speaks. And the most recent episode of the show, “Treehouse of Horror XXXVI,” continues this trend, with a surprisingly impressive actress supplying the voice of Springfield’s biggest pacifier enthusiast.

The first time we heard Maggie talk (apart from the odd gurgle provided by Nancy Cartwright) was way back in Season Two’s “Bart vs Thanksgiving.” In the episode, Bart’s nightmarish vision of his family includes a moment where Maggie tells him, “It’s your fault I can’t talk,” a line read by Carol Kane, who went uncredited in the episode.

Then, in Season Four’s “Lisa’s First Word,” Maggie’s one line (“Daddy”) was performed by the legendary Elizabeth Taylor, who had to record her part six times because it kept sounding “too sexy.”

In Season 20’s female-centric literary anthology, “Four Great Women and A Manicure,” a parody of Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead has Maggie deliver a speech to her fellow preschoolers, and she’s voiced by Hollywood icon Jodie Foster.

And if we’re counting extra-dimensional versions of the character, James Earl Jones briefly played an axe-wielding Maggie in “Treehouse of Horror V.”

For “Treehouse of Horror XXXVI,” producers found yet another highly acclaimed star to voice the Simpsons’ youngest child. The episode’s third segment, “Plastic World,” is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland in which the entirety of the Earth’s surface is covered with plastic garbage. We learn all of this during a Waterworld-esque prologue narrated by the great Viola Davis.

Toward the end of the story, it’s revealed that Homer and Marge have been mutated by nuclear waste from the power plant, which turned them into plastic monstrosities. After dispatching of their parents, Bart and Lisa discover that they have a secret plastic sibling: Maggie.

While they accept this new life form, we ultimately find out that Maggie (voiced by Davis) has been narrating the story the whole time because she’s conquered the world and filled it with plastic Maggie clones.

At least when she shot Mr. Burns, Maggie didn’t try to reshape civilization in her own image.
