Flooding continued in parts of Chiba Prefecture three days after record-breaking torrential rain, with nine people confirmed dead, one man still missing and authorities estimating that around 1,000 vehicles may have been abandoned across the prefecture.
Rain was still falling on the morning of August 16 in Oamishirasato, where some areas remained flooded and homes could still be seen surrounded by water.
According to Chiba Prefecture and other authorities, around 1,160 homes have suffered damage including flooding above and below floor level.
Officials also said around 1,000 vehicles may have been left abandoned across the prefecture as a result of the flooding.
One resident said water levels had fallen substantially since the previous evening after drainage pumps began operating. The resident, who commutes to Tokyo, said expressway access had finally been restored and that driving to work would be an option if necessary.
Rail services also remain disrupted.
East Japan Railway said the Sotobo Line is operating fewer trains than usual, while service remains suspended on some sections.
The suspensions are expected to continue, and replacement bus services are scheduled to operate on August 17.
Nine people have so far been confirmed dead in Chiba Prefecture as a result of the record rainfall.
In Wakaba Ward, Chiba city, one man remains missing, with police and other authorities continuing search operations from the morning of August 16.
