TOKYO –
Three female lions at Tama Zoological Park have died in succession after suffering dehydration and multiple organ failure, with heatstroke suspected as the cause.
The lions were named Mugi, Ichigo and Luena.
The zoo had been keeping 16 lions, 10 of which showed symptoms including loss of appetite and reduced activity.
Tama Zoological Park said it will strengthen measures to protect the animals from the heat.
