The 69th Jacksonville Area Golf Association Senior Championship had a tale of two endings on May 5 in the first of three years at the Stillwater Golf and Country Club in St. Augustine.

First, the runaway: Tim Cobb of St. Augustine won his second JAGA Senior title when he shot 73 in the final round to win by eight shots at 2-over-par 218. Cobb has made three starts in the tournament, his two titles (he won in 2020) and a tie for third.

Defending champion Brent Dietz (77), 2024 JAGA Senior champion Richard Ames (80) and past JAGA Amateur champion Ken Moody (76) tied for second 10-over.
Now for the theatrics: Robert Goettlicher, a three-time JAGA Amateur champion, eagled the first playoff hole to win the Super-Senior title over Tim Iley, after they ended 36 holes of regulation tied at 4-over 148.

Goettlicher had to birdie two of the last three holes to make the playoff, which was on the par-5 16th hole. Goettlicher reached the green in two and made a 25-footer for eagle, after Iley was on the green in three.
Garry Blackwell won the Grand Senior Division by seven shots over Paul Worley at 6-over 150, with a 72 in the final round.
Area players win U.S. Open qualifiers
Amateur Landon Durham of Ponte Vedra Beach and former University of North Florida standout Robbie Higgins won 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifiers, with another scheduled for May 11 at the Marsh Landing Country Club.
Durham, a senior at Elon, birdied three of his last five holes at the Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach on May 5 and shot 5-under 67 to edge another amateur, Lee Poppell of Tallahassee, and Harrison Shih of Saddle River, N.J., by one shot. Former PGA Tour player Luke Guthrie and Episcopal graduate Henry Robards (a sophomore at Mercer) survived a four-for-two playoff to get the final two spots for a 36-hole sectional tournament June 4.

Higgins had a bogey-free 64 at the Plantation Bay Country Club in Ormond Beach on May 6, topping Luis Gagne of Costa Rico by one shot. Derek Bard of Atlantic Beach also qualified with a 66.
Nacional cousins contend in FJT events
Jonah Nacional of St. Augustine posted a 4-over 148 to tie for fourth in the Florida Junior Tour 16-18 Lake Jovita Open, seven shots behind winner Michael Shane Frasure of Clermont. It was Nacional’s third consecutive finish of fourth or higher (including his first victory in April at LPGA International) and his ninth career top team on the FJT. … His cousin, Jaden Nacional, shot 5-over 149 to finish second to Jude Menard of Sarasota (145) in the FJT 13-15 Riverwood Open, at the Riverwood Golf Club in Port Charlotte. … Robert Parker finally has his hole-in-one. The 80-year-old aced the eighth hole at the Golf Club of Fleming Island from 108 yards, using a 9-iron.
