Check-in a man’s wardrobe has never really gone away. What’s different this season is the confidence. The heritage codes are all still there – tartan, windowpane, Prince of Wales – but nobody is treating them like museum pieces. They turn up in tailoring, in outerwear, on trousers, and in the layering pieces that do the actual work in a wardrobe. But the interest is in the handling. Blow a check up large enough and it stops reading as a pattern and starts reading as a graphic. Shrink it down and from across a room it behaves almost like a solid. Drop an unexpected colour into a tartan and the whole thing shifts register. That’s the shift this season, and it’s one worth exploring.
