New Delhi: In a major setback for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) amid growing internal divisions, Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has resigned from both the Upper House of Parliament and the primary membership of the party.
In his resignation letter, Ray criticised the TMC over its massive defeat in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections. He described the electoral verdict as a rejection of the Mamata Banerjee-led party’s “15-year anarchical rule.”
According to Ray, the defeat stemmed from widespread corruption, atrocities against women, and failures in key sectors including healthcare, education, industry, law and order, and employment.
“In the recently held election to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, the people have given a huge mandate in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the first time in the history of the state to put an end to 15-year anarchical rule of the Trinamool Congress arising out of widespread unbridled corruption, atrocities committed against women, abysmal failure in the field of health, education, industry, law and order, employment, etc,” he said.
Ray also praised the newly elected BJP government, stating that it had begun taking steps toward the overall development and reconstruction of West Bengal in line with its election manifesto.
“Meanwhile, the newly elected people’s government has started taking initiatives for overall development and reconstruction of West Bengal as per its Election Manifesto. In respectful acceptance of this historic verdict of the people, I have resigned today from the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) as a member and also from the primary membership of the All India Trinamool Congress,” he added.
Ray’s resignation comes amid ongoing speculation about a possible split within the TMC, with reports suggesting that around 20 Lok Sabha MPs could break away from the party.
The developments follow a recent rebellion led by expelled TMC MLA Ritabrata Banerjee in the West Bengal Assembly.
Banerjee, who was expelled from the party for alleged anti-party activities, formed a separate faction in the Assembly with the support of 58 MLAs. He was later elected Leader of Opposition, replacing Sobhandev Chattopadhyay.
The Ritabrata Banerjee faction has openly criticised the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee, holding him responsible for the party’s poor performance in the recent Assembly elections.
