After a day of political drama and twists, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Rabiul Alam Chowdhury began campaigning for the Rejinagar Assembly by-election on Sunday, while former minister and party leader Humayun Kabir stopped campaigning in protest.
Chowdhury claimed that party supremo Mamata Banerjee had assured him that she would campaign for him in the final phase of the by-election.
“Supremo Mamata Banerjee assured me that she will campaign for me,” Chowdhury claimed, adding that Banerjee had advised him to begin the party campaign on his own.
After holding a closed-door strategy meeting with Jalangi MLA Babar Ali and Kaliganj MLA Alifa Khatun at his Beldanga residence, Chowdhury told reporters that discussions were also held with several former MLAs, party leaders and workers.
“We held a closed-door party strategy meeting with two MLAs, along with several former MLAs, leaders and workers. We have started campaigning and will also campaign in different areas of Rejinagar,” he said.
Chowdhury later campaigned in various parts of the Rejinagar Assembly constituency. Meanwhile, Humayun Kabir stopped campaigning in protest, adding another twist to the TMC’s preparations for the by-election.
