Chennai: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, the Tamil Nadu BJP on Monday showed a drastic shift towards pro-Tamil politics with its State Central Committee hailing Modi as champion of Tamil culture, tradition and promoter of Tamil language and history at the global stage.
The party’s shift towards Tamil sentiments comes after the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) which does not have a Dravidian epithet in its name captured power in the State. The TVK which has a flag song of ‘Thamizhan kodi parakkudhu’ (Tamilian’s flag is flying) also has the Vaagai flower, a symbol of victory in ancient Tamil Nadu and elephants used by the sangam Tamil kings for battle in the party flag.
The BJP which took up issues like lighting a lamp at a new place at the Thiruparankundram temple during the Assembly elections in which it was routed, did not pass a single resolution on issues related to the Hindutva. However, the party spoke about the economic and infrastructure development of Tamil Nadu.
The meeting passed a resolution hailing Narendra Modi’s efforts to celebrate Tamil culture, tradition and to promote the socio-cultural and economic development of Tamil Nadu. The party pointed out how the Prime Minister remembered Tamil savant Thiruvalluvar, poet Bharathiar in his speeches and how he propagated the valour of Tamil kings Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola and gave national recognition to the historic symbols of Tamil Nadu.
Another resolution cited Modi’s efforts to conduct Tamil Sangamam to protect Tamil traditions and hail the greatness of the language.
“From UN to Ayodhya, the Prime Minister is propagating the greatness of Tamils’, ” a resolution said and he also released the Russian translation of Thirukkural during the BRICS meet. The party hailed the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive of the Prime Minister to protect the archaeological symbols and ancient worshipping places of Tamil Nadu. The Viksit Bharat scheme played a major part in promoting the culture, language and youth power of Tamil Nadu.
On the economic front, the party said the ‘PM Ujwala Yojana’ had provided relief to the women by distributing gas cylinders and the BJP government provided safe houses for poor families through the PMAY-G scheme while giving nutritious diet to women through the PM-Poshan scheme.
One of the resolutions said the schemes implemented by the Prime Minister are reaching the poor families and ensures a dignified life for them. The committee lauded Narendra Modi’s public life which is dedicated for people’s welfare and provides good governance. The BJP also hailed the Atma Nirbhar Bharat scheme which is aimed at making India self-sufficient and one of the industrially developed countries in the world.
