The video glimpse of Prabhas’ upcoming film Fauzi features Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose meeting German dictator Adolf Hitler during World War II. While the historical meeting is rooted in reality, the film appears to fictionalise the encounter, with Bose praising the film’s superspy and referring to how his Bhagavad Gita-inspired code has troubled the British.

“Tollywood filmmakers have always been fascinated by the valiant Subhas Chandra Bose. The makers of Fauzi have once again invoked his name and courageous deeds,” says producer M. S. Raju.

Popularly known as Netaji, Subhas Chandra Bose was one of India’s most prominent freedom fighters. He established the Provisional Government of Free India in 1943 and led the Indian National Army (INA) in its struggle against British rule. His call, “Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom,” continues to symbolise his uncompromising commitment to independence.

Telugu filmmakers have explored his legacy in several films. Nikhil Siddhartha’s Spy revolved around a protagonist inspired by Bose and his daring exploits, with the story also exploring the mystery surrounding his disappearance and a secret nuclear-related facility. Kalyan Ram’s Devil also touched upon the freedom fighter’s legacy, placing a British secret agent at the centre of a fictional mission involving a plot against Bose.

However, M. S. Raju believes that invoking a revered historical figure requires more than merely using the name. “I don’t want to name any particular filmmaker, but simply using his name is not enough. The story should have sufficient scope and purpose to justify bringing such a legendary freedom fighter into the narrative,” he adds.

Interestingly, the use of historical figures has produced mixed results in Indian cinema. Shankar’s Indian (Bharateeyudu), starring Kamal Haasan, struck a chord with audiences, while its sequel, Indian 2, failed to recreate the same impact, he concludes
