Tollywood Stars Discover a New Calling: Talk Shows

Tollywood stars are finding a new way to entertain audiences, and this time, it is not on the big screen. From Nagarjuna and Balakrishna to Rana Daggubati and Jagapathi Babu, several actors have explored the talk-show format, bringing their personalities to the fore. Now, megastar Chiranjeevi is reportedly in talks to host a celebrity talk show on Netflix, a move that could add another dimension to his four-decade-long career.

Director Ramesh Varma believes Chiranjeevi’s entry into the space would generate considerable interest. “Chiranjeevi garu’s first talk show would be a sensation. His grace, charm and wit would help him connect with Telugu viewers, while celebrities would also feel comfortable opening up and chatting with him,” he says.

For an actor who has spent decades entertaining audiences through films, a talk show offers an opportunity to connect with people in a different way. “It also reflects how the boundaries between cinema and digital entertainment are gradually disappearing, with established stars exploring formats that allow audiences to see more of their personalities,” Ramesh Varma adds. .

The younger generation is not far behind. Teja Sajja has ventured into the hosting space with The Traitors, showing that actors need not wait for decades in the industry before exploring opportunities beyond films.

“Teja Sajja is a smart and intelligent guy. He understands things quickly and gets the timing right. I have known him since his childhood, and he is doing a good job as a host,” says Ramesh Varma.

Nagarjuna, meanwhile, has made hosting Bigg Boss Telugu a significant part of his television presence. His composed manner and ability to manage contestants have helped him connect with viewers outside his film audience. Rana Daggubati has brought his own style to conversations through The Rana Daggubati Show, while Jagapathi Babu has also explored the format with Jayammu Nischayammu Raa.

But it is Nandamuri Balakrishna who has surprised many viewers with the personality he brings to his talk show. Often associated with intense, larger-than-life roles on screen, the actor has shown a more relaxed and humorous side while interacting with his guests.

His conversations, featuring anecdotes from mythology, insights into filmmaking and acting, and spontaneous exchanges with actors, directors and politicians, have offered audiences a different perspective on the star. The informal setting has allowed Balakrishna to move beyond his familiar screen image and connect with viewers in a more personal way.

“Balakrishna almost raised the bar for Telugu talk shows and drew millions of viewers,” says producer Lagadapati Sridhar. “His mythological anecdotes, acting tips and fun-filled conversations with prominent personalities have made him more accessible and likeable.”

Sridhar also believes that Balakrishna has demonstrated how a Telugu celebrity chat show can compete with popular Hindi entertainment formats. “Karan Johar and Kapil Sharma have established themselves as major names in the talk-show business. Balakrishna, too, has managed to entertain guests and audiences with his humour, spontaneity and distinctive style,” he points out.

“His television presence has introduced a different side of him to younger viewers, including those who may not have closely followed his films over the years” he concludes
