Tom Holland started out as a child actor, but became one of the most recognisable faces in the world after landing the role of Spider Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016

Despite being one of the most recognisable faces on TV and being a world-famous actor, Tom Holland has a lot going on behind the scenes, including a hidden health battle. The British actor rose to fame when landing the role of Peter Parker/ Spider Man in the Marvel Cinematic universe and making his first appearance in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War.

Before his big Marvel debut, Holland, who turns 30 on June 1, was a child actor in the disaster drama The Impossible, which earned him several awards. But while starting his impressive career, not many people knew that Holland had a hidden health battle and struggled with dyslexia and ADHD.

He opened up about being told he had dyslexia when he was just seven-years-old, and about his particular struggles with writing and spelling.

Dyslexia is a lifelong neurodevelopmental learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling. According to British Dyslexia Association, Dyslexia is an information-processing difficulty, meaning the brain processes written and spoken language differently, but it is not an indicator of intelligence.

Holland’s parents, Dominic and Nicki Holland, moved him to a private school for better academic support and always encouraged him by telling him to just “try his best”.

In an interview, Tom said: “My spelling was really the biggest hurdle. I worked really hard at school. I didn’t do particularly well but my parents said, ‘As long as you try your best.’”

Holland was also diagnosed with ADHD – Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder which can sometimes hinder his craft. ADHD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that also affects how the brain functions.

It is characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning, work, school, and social relationships Holland opened up about the diagnoses in an interview with ING.

He said: “I have ADHD and I’m dyslexic, and I find sometimes when someone gives me a blank canvas that it can be slightly intimidating. And sometimes you are met with those challenges when developing a character.”

Tom Holland is engaged to actress and singer Zendaya, who met on set of Spider-Man: Homecoming back in 2016. In 2021 paparazzi pictures emerged, showing Holland and Zendaya kissing, holding hands, and smiling on the red carpet together.

In late 2024 rumours began that the couple engaged, and this was only confirmed by Zendaya’s diamond engagement ring which she wore to the 2024 Golden Globes.

There have since been rumours that the couple secretly tied the knot earlier this year, when AI-generated pictures were shared on social media.

The joke extended further when the actress appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! She trolled the audience by sharing a supposed “wedding clip” from her movie The Drama , only to reveal that Tom Holland’s face had been digitally superimposed over her co-star, Robert Pattinson.

While on the show she said: “While I was just out and about in real life, people were like, ‘Oh my God, your wedding photos are gorgeous’. And I was like, ‘Babe, they’re AI. They’re not real’.”
