SOUTHPORT, England — Everyone once in their lifetime should feel loved the way the Royal Birkdale fans adore Tommy Fleetwood.
Everyone should experience one day filled with the adulation that Fleetwood has received this week from the massive crowds, some 300,000 strong for the 154th British Open.
Southport is where “Tommy Lad’’ is from. He’s the “Son of Southport,’’ and the fans from every grandstand and behind every fairway rope have been lifting him with an energy that’s difficult to describe unless you’re there with him.
“You hear it constantly no matter where he goes — it’s constant unconditional support,’’ Jon Rahm, who was paired with Fleetwood on Saturday, said.
