Drew Mestemaker continues to make his case to move up draft boards.
It’s possible his potential future boss was in the building to see his huge Saturday for Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys quarterback accounted for five touchdowns — four passing and one receiving — as Oklahoma State creamed Kansas State 66-28. And in the building to see the loud performance at Bill Snyder Family Stadium was Jets general manager Darren Mougey, who was spotted talking with Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Sean Brophy before kickoff.
Right now, the Jets, who are conceivably in the market to draft a quarterback in 2027 at 2-6, have the No. 4 overall pick (via the Colts from the Sauce Gardner trade), the sixth pick and the 10th pick from the Cowboys, according to Tankathon.
While a lot of the preseason talk and punditry focused on Texas’ Arch Manning, Mestemaker has made the case to be the top quarterback selected in next year’s draft. In ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest big board, he ranks Mestemaker as the No. 2 overall prospect and top quarterback in 2027.
Pro Football Focus also has him as the No. 1 quarterback taken in the draft.
Mestemaker threw for 4,379 yards last season and has eclipsed the 2,600-yard passing mark this year. He already has six games this season in which he’s completed at least three touchdown passes, throwing for five scores twice.
The quarterback, though, was pretty amped to catch a 5-yard touchdown in the win Saturday.
“I gotta say catching a touchdown,” Mestemaker told TNT Sports when asked about what the most gratifying type of touchdown of his career has been. “That’s the first of my career. That was definitely the most fun touchdown of the day.”
Whether it’s the Jets or another team, Mestemaker could prove to be a game-changer with his arm skills.
