New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday advised young lawyers to train under senior advocates, saying they could not learn the niceties of the profession without proper guidance.
A Bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Augustine George Masih observed that young members of the Bar must learn what should and should not be said in court.
“Today, I am told that some youngsters are straightaway starting their own offices without any training. That is really not good at all. Unless you train with seniors, you will not know the real skills of advocacy and the real tricks of the trade,” Justice Nagarathna said.
The observations came while the Bench was hearing a petition arising from an order of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Nagarathna said young lawyers should work with seniors who could guide them.
“We know youngsters are ambitious nowadays. But unless you train with seniors, you will not know the niceties of the profession. That is how it has continued from generation to generation. The niceties of this noble profession and its good practices are passed on,” she said.
The Bench observed that young lawyers were obtaining degrees and immediately setting up offices.
“But where are the soft skills? You may have the hardware, but soft skills have to be developed every day. You have to learn from a senior or sit in court and observe,” it said.
Expressing concern about the future of the Bar, Justice Nagarathna said observing court proceedings would also help young lawyers understand which mistakes they should avoid.
