Srinagar: In a moving tribute to courage and selflessness, a government-run school in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has been renamed after Pahalgam hero Aadil Hussain Shah.
The decision commemorates his supreme sacrifice while confronting terrorists who opened fire on tourists at the scenic Baisaran meadow on April 22 last year, an incident that shocked the region and the nation.
The institution, formerly known as Hapatnar High School, has now been officially rechristened as Shaheed Aadil Memorial High School. The renaming ceremony, held in the Hapatnar area near Pahalgam was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Education and Health Sakeena Itoo, along with local officials and members of the community. The gesture stands as a lasting acknowledgement of Aadil’s bravery and his ultimate act of sacrifice in the face of grave danger.
Shah, a local tourist guide and pony handler, lost his life while trying to protect visitors during the terror attack in Pahalgam. His courageous actions, carried out in a moment of extreme peril, drew widespread admiration across J&K and beyond. By putting his own life at risk to safeguard others, he embodied extraordinary humanity and valour.
Addressing the gathering, Itoo paid heartfelt tribute to Aadil’s heroism, stating that his courage would forever remain etched in public memory. She emphasised that his selfless act was a powerful example of moral strength and compassion, reflecting the true spirit of Kashmir’s hospitality and resilience. Recalling her visit to the attack site on the same night, the minister noted that the tragedy had left a profound impact on all who witnessed its aftermath.
She further explained that the government’s decision to rename the school was not merely symbolic but aimed at ensuring that future generations remember and draw inspiration from Aadil’s sacrifice. By associating his name with an educational institution, the administration seeks to instil values of bravery, service, and humanity among students who will pass through its doors in the years to come, she asserted.
The minister also highlighted that this recognition would serve as a source of solace and pride for Aadil’s grieving family. She added that his legacy would continue to inspire countless individuals, reinforcing the message that acts of courage and compassion can leave an indelible mark on society.
“Through this renaming, the story of Aadil Hussain Shah is set to endure—not only in memory but in the everyday lives of students and the community—standing as a reminder of the power of sacrifice and the enduring spirit of heroism”, she said.
