New Delhi: Cognizant has come under scrutiny in the Donald Trump administration’s first major investigation into alleged fraud involving H-1B and PERM work visa programmes.
US Department of Labor Inspector General Anthony D’Esposito said investigators had issued dozens of summons as part of what he described as the administration’s most aggressive effort so far to tackle foreign labour fraud.
D’Esposito named the IT services giant while outlining the large-scale probe. However, officials did not disclose specific allegations against Cognizant or details of the ongoing investigation.
The probe is examining suspected abuse in the H-1B programme, which allows US companies to hire foreign workers in specialised occupations, and the PERM labour certification process used for employment-based green card applications.
The investigation signals a tougher enforcement approach by the Trump administration towards employment visa compliance.
