Kathy Griffin has gone Instagram official with her mysterious new boyfriend, revealing their 43-year age-gap
Kathy Griffin has been met with a huge reaction from fans after revealing her new relationship – with a man 43 years younger than her. The comedian, 65, unveiled her boyfriend on social media for the first time this week, making their budding romance Instagram official.
In the snap, she could be seen holding hands with her mystery man as he appeared to open a car door for her, with the pair both wearing black outfits. Although she hasn’t shed light on his identity, she captioned the upload: “He’s 22. Have at it, internet.”
Her comments section was divided, as many told her to “get it, girl!”, while others questioned if the reaction would be the same if the genders were reversed.
“Women in male fields,” one posted, as another encouraged: “He’s 22? Perfect. Old enough to vote, young enough to think Olive Garden is fancy. Go have fun.”
“If he is opening the car door for you, keep him. More class at 22 than most men,” a follower commented, as an Instagram user agreed: “He’s attractive, has manners and treating her properly. Thats what matters [sic].”
However, some weren’t too impressed, as a social media fan wrote: “It’s not going to end well but you do you.” Another said: “If it were a 65+ year old man with a 22 year old woman, the comments would be very, very different.”
Not fussed in the slightest, Kathy slid into her own comments to add: “I AM DYING AT THESE COMMENTS.”
The TV star has been married twice – to Matt Moline in 2001, before their split in 2006 – after which she tied the knot with Randy Bick in 2020.
Following their split last year, she turned to online dating thanks to advice from singer Sia, where she confessed that she “accidentally fell in love” with a 23-year-old.
Reflecting on her return to dating in a candid essay in The Cut last year, Kathy explained that she hasn’t been with a man her own age for years, highlighting her 18-year age-gap with her ex-husband, Randy – and quipped that she was constantly referred to as “a cougar”.
“I kind of am a cougar, which to me just means you have the freedom to choose the person that you want as opposed to the age bracket that society tells you is the only option for you,” she said.
“They’re the ones who asked me out! I put 64 on my profile, and when I went on those dates, every one of them was at least 20 years younger. What am I gonna do? I can’t let this bangin’ body go to waste [sic].”
Touching on her 23-year-old ex, she added: “Because of his age, he didn’t have the usual sexism, misogyny, and biases that guys my age tend to have. He seemed to see me. I know that sounds really corny. Oh God, it sounds so lame! But I felt really comfortable with him, and I felt very content just hanging out. It never could’ve lasted, and we both knew that. But it was nice to know that my heart could still feel like that in my 60s, and it was nice to have the universe show me a guy that I really got a kick out of but also respected.”
“I really was in love with him,” she insisted. “He touched my heart. He came along at a time in my life where I was like, ‘Men suck, and there’s only bad ones, and why do I pick the worst ones?’ And then he appeared, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay, well, he’s cool, but it’s dumb, because he’s too young.’ We gave it a shot anyway, and we both went with it for a while, and then it came time to go.
“He made me feel sexy and special and smart and funny. It had a lot of the elements of what I think would’ve made a real, lasting relationship. He hadn’t been banged around that TV comic Kathy Griffin, 65, poses with new boyfriend, 22, telling her critics ‘have at it’ much. He’s so young that he didn’t have this baggage. And I just knew that my baggage was going to get in the way.”
