Hyderabad:After nearly a decade of trying to conceive, Gaddam Triveni and Gaddam Mastan Rao of Boiguda were blessed with twin babies at Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday after undergoing IVF treatment at the government facility.
The couple welcomed a baby boy and a baby girl following treatment at the hospital’s IVF Centre. Doctors said the same treatment would have cost between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 12 lakh at private hospitals. At Gandhi Hospital, the IVF procedure, delivery and medicines were provided free of charge.
Both agricultural labourers, the couple had moved from their village to Hyderabad in the hope of starting a family. They had undergone several treatments at private hospitals over the past 10 years without success.
IVF Centre head Dr T Shobha said the couple underwent 13 cycles of ovulation induction and one cycle of intrauterine insemination (IUI), but did not achieve pregnancy.
They later approached the IVF Centre at Gandhi Hospital, where doctors diagnosed unexplained infertility and began IVF treatment. After one IVF cycle followed by frozen embryo transfer, Triveni conceived twins, Dr Shobha said.
Doctors later performed an elective lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) and safely delivered the babies. Both the mother and newborns are healthy, she added.
Health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and superintendent N. Vani congratulated the medical team and said the IVF centres set up at Gandhi and Petlaburj hospitals were helping many families access advanced fertility treatment without financial burden.
