KARIMNAGAR: Karimnagar police have identified two suspects in the PMJ Jewellery robbery case as habitual offenders, officials said on Tuesday.

Police said the accused, Anand and Imtiaz, are part of a five-member inter-state gang believed to be from Bihar. Sixteen special teams have been deployed across multiple states to trace the gang, which allegedly carried out the daylight robbery on May 3 in Karimnagar city.

Investigators said the gang adopted a planned escape route, avoiding main highways and moving through interior villages including Malkapur, Chintakunta, Velishala and Rudraram. Police suspect the group may be heading towards border areas of Nandurbar in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

In a key development, police recovered one of the getaway motorcycles, a two-wheeler, abandoned at Godavari Pushkar Ghat in Dharmapuri, Jagtial district. Officials said the vehicle carried a fake number plate linked to a Hyderabad-registered car. A helmet was also found nearby.

Police suspect the accused may have crossed the Godavari River or switched vehicles to continue their escape towards Maharashtra.

CCTV footage showed the gang entering Karimnagar at 8.35 am on Sunday and leaving via Rudraram village at 12.05 pm, shortly after the robbery. Officials said the movement indicated prior reconnaissance of the route and escape plan.

While Anand and Imtiaz have been identified, efforts are underway to trace the remaining three members. Police teams are coordinating with counterparts in Maharashtra, Bihar and Gujarat.

Senior officials said technical surveillance is being used to track the suspects and expressed confidence that arrests will be made soon.
