Chennai: Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin warned against the imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu through Navodaya Schools and said that learning Hindi had nothing to do with patriotism and that the State had not suffered any setback due to the people not mastering Hindi.
He was reacting to the remark made by the Supreme Court, ‘Tamil Nadu must change its attitude against Hindi and that the State could function like a separate country,’ while hearing a case relating to allowing Navodaya Schools in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu, which followed the bilingual policy, was the leading state in India in all sectors and ranked first in higher education enrolment, besides having the highest number of women working in factories, he said.
The State had produced Nobel laureates to leading space scientists of ISRO with none of them knowing Hindi, he said, adding that it was heartening to see the new government also following the bilingual policy and announcing that there was no need to allow Navodaya schools in Tamil Nadu.
