Manchester United star Matheus Cunha will not face additional sanctions despite re-entering the field after being dismissed against AS Roma. The 27-year-old received his second yellow card during stoppage time in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match for a belated challenge.
The Brazilian had collected his initial caution after netting the decisive goal, as he removed his jersey and leaped into the jubilant supporters. Cunha failed to head down the tunnel following his dismissal and remained on the sidelines until the final whistle.

When it blew, the forward stepped back onto the field before being guided away by Michael Carrick, who recognized that Cunha was jeopardizing an extension to his one-match suspension, via The Mirror. However, Cunha has escaped additional punishment, with UEFA stating: “The UEFA official reports did not mention anything about this incident.

“Therefore the automatic one-match ban following two yellow cards should not be extended for this reason. We are not investigating further this matter.”
Carrick acknowledged that he was ‘disappointed’ with Cunha’s dismissal, which reduced United to 10 players in the closing stages. Nevertheless, the United boss remained thrilled with his equalizing strike and emphatic winner following a tactical adjustment.

“Matheus can do them things, he’s got them moments,” Carrick explained. “We put him inside, we swapped him with Bryan [Mbeumo] at half-time to try and get him in the middle of the pitch, try and give us a little bit of different shape, and put him in the centre of the pitch, and he found himself in good positions.
“Disappointed with how it finished, but again just shows how much he cares and willing to do, and when he’s in that frame of mind, he’s in that mood and he plays like that, that’s what we want from him.”
The victory marked United’s first in 10 matches, as they secured their sixth point from four Champions League games, strengthening their prospects of reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 2022. Nevertheless, Carrick remains grounded, with his own future still under scrutiny.

“It’s one game, so it depends on what happens next,” the Red Devils boss said. “We’ve got to capitalize on that.
“But tonight, the boys showed an awful lot. I thought we came out in the second half and, unfortunately, with Carlos [Baleba] having to go off, Youri [Tielemans] came on the pitch and I thought he was fantastic. He showed everything that he is as a personality and as a character.
“He’s experienced, to step into a game like that. The boys just went with the flow, and you could feel how positive it was. It was nice to see this place like that again.”
