Sept. 27 (UPI) — USC issued a one-game suspension to Desman Stephens II for his hit on quarterback Dante Moore during a loss to Oregon, the Trojans announced Sunday.
Stephens delivered the hit in the first quarter of the 41-27 setback Saturday in Los Angeles. Moore slid down on the play before Stephens hit him in the head with his shoulder. The hit resulted in Moore’s head slamming to the ground.

Stephens celebrated with teammates after the hit. He was ejected for targeting. Moore was taken to a local hospital for treatement.
“Desman’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character,” Trojans coach Lincoln Riley said in a statement. “He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences of his actions and will learn from this.
“The entire Trojan Family wishes Dante a full recovery, and we send our best regards to him and his family.”
Stephens also issued an apology for his actions.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game,” Stephens said. “Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable.

“Regardless of what was going through my mind at the time, there is no justification for smiling or celebrating while another player receives medical attention.I take full responsibility for my actions. That is not the person or teammate I want to be, and I will learn from this.
“I am deeply sorry to Dante, his family and everyone who saw my reaction. It is not representative of USC or our program. I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.”
Moore completed 8 of 10 passes for 77 yards before his exit. Backup Dylan Raiola completed 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards and two scores in relief of Moore.
The Trojans (4-1) will now be without Stephens for a matchup with Washington (3-1) on Saturday in Los Angeles. The Ducks (3-1) will host UCLA (4-0) on Oct. 10 in Eugene.
