Val Chmerkovskiy has been benched for the upcoming week of Dancing With the Stars. The pro dancer, who has been making headlines for a while, became the first to be suspended in the show’s history. With Val sitting out the upcoming episode, the focus has turned to his personal life, including how he and his wife, Jenna Johnson, have been through some extremely difficult periods in their lives, one of which was the miscarriage that left the couple heartbroken.
Val Chmerkovskiy’s wife, Jenna Johnson, once got candid about her miscarriage
Val Chmerkovskiy admitted to being out of line when it came to his comments toward Carrie Ann after the previous episode of Dancing With the Stars. While he acknowledged that his comment was unnecessary, it has brought his personal life back into conversations, including how he and his wife, Jenna Johnson, struggled to become parents.
In 2023, during a conversation with MomForce Podcast, the pro dancer spoke with Vanessa Quigley about a miscarriage she had experienced before welcoming her and Val Chmerkovskiy’s rainbow baby. In the episode titled Journey from Miscarriage to Motherhood, Jenna Johnson recalled how crazy it was to experience something devastating like that after being overjoyed about expecting their little one.
She recalled they were doing a show in Dallas when, during the rehearsal for a “huge event,” she felt that something was not right. Jenna Johnson recalled how it was a massive opportunity that would go all weekend. However, it turned into a heartbreaking moment for them. She was quoted as saying:
“It’s crazy how you can experience so much joy followed by so much devastation and sorrow. I ended up miscarrying. We were doing a show in Dallas, Texas, and we were rehearsing for the show, and it was a huge event that was gonna be happening all weekend … and Val and I were practicing in the afternoon.”
Jenna Johnson reflected on how during the practice she suddenly began to feel as if she might be bleeding. She recalled how her husband, Val Chmerkovskiy, went pale as soon as she turned to him and started panicking. Jenna revealed that they ran towards their hotel room. However, unfortunately, there was nothing they could have done. She was quoted as saying:
“While we were practicing, I was like, Oh my gosh, I think something’s happening. I think I might be bleeding. And so I turned to Val, and immediately his face went pale white, and I started panicking. I started running to our hotel room and got to the hotel room, and I was just gushing blood. And I end up miscarrying in our room, and it was. It was just terrible. There is no other way to go around it.”
Jenna Johnson was depressed for eight months after the miscarriage
Jenna Johnson recalled feeling absolutely helpless in that moment. The dancer revealed that it took her a while to feel like herself again and to open up about what she went through. Losing her baby was an extremely difficult moment for the couple. However, Jenna eventually understood that she was not alone and that she had to share her experience. Jenna admitted that the miscarriage put her in a deep depression for eight months.
Jenna Johnson had previously talked about her infertility issues in an Instagram post. She recalled how for two years she would ache every time she came across a pregnancy announcement video. However, she tried her best to stay positive and hoped to have her own little bundle of joy, even as she was heartbroken about never having that opportunity. She had penned:
“I remember watching people share these videos and aching because I wished so badly I could experience that joy. After two years of infertility, and hundreds of negative tests after negative tests, it was heart-wrenching at times to stay optimistic and made me question whether I would ever have this opportunity.”
However, Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy’s prayers were soon answered, and the couple welcomed their baby boy, Rome, in January 2026. The couple announced their little one’s arrival by simultaneously sharing a black-and-white Instagram photo of the newborn holding on to his mom’s thumb as Val cradled both their hands in his own.
