Vernon Kay’s comments came as he discussed the coming heatwave that is set to grip the UK, saying people were “dusting off last year’s swim shorts” before turning to an item that’s “on trend”

Vernon Kay has shed light on the “grief” he gets at home as he revealed that his daughter said a certain fashion choice made him look “stupid”. His revelations on his home life came as he addressed an upcoming bout of hot weather due to grip the UK over the bank holiday weekend, with some areas forecast to hit a sweltering 33C.

On his BBC Radio 2 show yesterday (Thursday, May 21), Vernon said people were “getting ready” for the sunshine and even “dusting off last year’s swim shorts”, before turning to fashion trends.

In the segment, Vernon said: “A lot of people are getting ready for the sunshine; it’s on its way. A lot of people (are) dusting off last year’s swim shorts, etc, etc, getting ready. What’s on trend, apparently, is Jesus sandals.”

One of his studio colleagues shook their head at this claim, Vernon noted, but he insisted that he was “serious”. He added that sandals were “at the top” of the “footwear to be seen in”.

He continued: “Jesus sandals, the old school desert stompers. Yes, honestly! Yeah, they’re coming back. I’m like, ‘Not a chance. Not a chance. No way’. Especially that classic look with socks.

“It’s like… you know the shoes that you can put in the dishwasher to clean ’em? The ones that the kids wear? The rubber ones….Crocs. Yeah, others are available, but you know, they were the originator, weren’t they? Them and socks.

“Like, what? I get grief around the house for wearing me slippers with socks. You know what I mean? It’s a strong look’.”

Mimicking the voice of one of his children, Vernon joked: “‘Dad, you look stupid!’ Why, who cares? I’m within my own four walls. I’ll do what I want! Funny.”

Vernon shares daughters Phoebe and Amber with former Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly, who he split from after 23 years of marriage earlier this month. It isn’t the first time he has spoken about his children publicly.

In April, Vernon mentioned how he and Tess had been discussing a family shift they “don’t really want”, confessing that the dynamic they share with their daughters was “changing”.

Vernon lives in Buckinghamshire with Tess and Amber, while Phoebe has moved to the US to study in New York. It seems, however, they may not be quite ready for their daughters to become fully independent.

He told The Times: “Now that Phoebe is 21 and Amber is nearly 17, our relationship with them is changing. We talk about encouraging them to leave the nest and be independent, but we don’t really want them to. You have to learn to enter their world and that world has pitfalls that just didn’t exist for us.

“When Phoebe started going out, we became acutely aware of drink spiking. I think that just didn’t happen in the 90s.”
