Vernon Kay left his BBC Radio 2 listeners in stitches when one of his colleagues brought up a TikTok that’s gone viral, featuring a woman discovering his large hand prints

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay, 52, has given a funny response after discovering a video of a woman on TikTok taking an especially keen interest in his hands.

Vernon has seen many things during his time as a radio and television presenter, but, earlier this week, he received a shock when his colleague Ellie Brennan revealed that his hands had become a talking point online.

After joking that he does indeed listen to Steps when he’s in the bath, inspired by some mysterious graffiti about the TV star in West Denton, Newcastle, the duo got on to the subject of another viral social media moment.

Introducing the topic, and prompting Ellie, Vernon said: “There’s another one, as well, you mentioned the other day that’s gone viral on Tikky Tokky…have you seen that one?”

Ellie responded: “I’ve been sent this one several times, again, of a video of a lady who’s in Blackpool, who has found a monument, I guess.”

Vernon briefly interrupted by describing it as “a moulding”, before Ellie continued: “A moulding yes, of your hands when you opened a site. And to celebrate it..”

Vernon interjected again to explain that he had opened one of the rides on Blackpool Pleasure Beach, before Ellie added: “Oh, was it? So you put your hands in a moulding, and it’s there for everyone to see, to say, ‘Vernon Kay opened this ride’. Let’s just say, this woman is flabbergasted at the size of your hands.”

Vernon replied: “Well that’s why in a 10 game season, playing American Football for the London Warriors, I had nine interceptions. Almost won a game.”

Ellie, however, quipped: “That’s not really what she was saying.”

Vernon responded with a laugh: “Yeah, I can catch in my big mitts. I mean, is it true? It’s official, gang. It doesn’t work on the radio.

“But if you’ve got a good sense of humour, then you’ll get it. You’ll know straight away what I’ve just done and it’s relating to my HANDS, alright. There’s a few people out there who have sick imaginations…size of that thumb.”

After responding to the viral clip, the BBC team continued on with the show. The video in question was posted by one Ellena Walker on TikTok with the caption, “Blimey Vernon”. In the video, Ellena looked impressed while checking out the radio host’s hand prints, while Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye played in the background.

She and her friends then placed their own, much smaller, hands inside the prints left by Vernon, before she comically pretended to lick the monument.

The plaque said: “Vernon Kay opened Infusion at Pleasure Beach Blackpool on 6th June 2007.” Since it was posted online the TikTok has, at the time of writing, received 19,000 likes, 167 comments, and has been shared 4,917 times.

Vernon later posted about the moment on his own Instagram with a close-up photo of his thumb, alongside a caption, which read: “Since this morning’s @bbcradio2 show it’s been requested I show my BIG hands. So here you go…Tune in tomorrow from 0930!!!! 88-91FM DAB.”
