Vernon Kay told his BBC Radio 2 listeners “not a chance” as he commented on his friend Sara Cox’s new role as Scott Mills’ replacement on the station’s prestigious breakfast slot
DJ Vernon Kay admitted “not a chance” as he congratulated his pal Sara Cox after he bagged a new role as BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show host.
Sara replaces Scott Mills, who was sacked by the Beeb after they said they received new information regarding a police probe into historic sexual offences.
Vernon was once the bookmakers favourite to replace Scott after he was removed from the show. Other names in the running included Dermot O’Leary before Cox eventually bagged the gig.
Vernon took to his own Radio 2 show to congratulate his fellow Bolton-born presenter on her new job.
He said yesterday (Friday, April 24): “Congratulations to Sara Cox, your new Radio 2 Breakfast Show host, she’s going to be absolutely awesome. Without a doubt, she’s going to be mega.”
The radio host then went on to joke that the station will “be like Bolton FM in the morning” before quipping that the pair will need to change their thick Lancashire accents.
Vernon continued: “Bravo Sara, I sent a little message last night. It’s going to be like Bolton FM in the morning, it really is. Doing it for the best town in the great north-west.
“All those in Bury, Burnley, Blackburn, back off, alright. You know it makes sense. Leave it, leave it, alright. Preston, you and all. Stop it. Chorley, pack it in. Behave yourselves.
“It will be all about the Bolton, I think we might need to change our accents a little bit. We’ll do the Queen’s.”
Vernon then performed a mock radio announcement in a posh accent before adding: “No chance, not a chance. So excited, Sara on the breakfast show. Very very soon on BBC Radio 2.”
Sara currently presents the station’s teatime slot, which she has fronted since 2019. The 51-year-old said she was “ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed” to be taking over the station’s flagship show.
“It’s been a dream to host the breakfast show since I joined Radio 2 and it feels like a bit of a full circle for me,” she added.
“It takes quite a lot to make me speechless, but when I got asked to host the Radio 2 breakfast show I was momentarily lost for words.”
The BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show gig is one of the most prestigious jobs in British radio but Vernon’s mid-morning slot is actually the most popular radio show in the UK
Radio 2 boss Helen Thomas said she was “delighted” that Cox was taking over the breakfast show, saying that she “thoroughly deserves this gig”.
“Sara is adored by her millions of listeners at teatime, and having regularly deputised in the slot, I already know she’ll build a brilliant rapport with the breakfast audience and get the nation going each morning with her trademark warmth and humour,” she said.
