Vernon Kay told his BBC Radio 2 listeners about some emotional family news that is on the horizon – but it will mean the DJ has to take some time off from his show
Radio DJ Vernon Kay opened up about an emotional family event before he revealed he’s taking some time off from his BBC Radio 2 gig.
The presenter, 52, has been through a difficult time in his personal life in recent months. Last month it was confirmed that he and wife Tess Daly, with whom he shares two daughters, were separating after almost 23 years of marriage.
Vernon told his listeners that he will be missing from the station tomorrow (Friday, June 19) after announcing some big news for the former couple’s youngest daughter, 17-year-old Amber.
Amber is set to go to university in September 2027 and Vernon is taking the day off to ferry his youngest to university open days.
Vernon started off the segment by asking listeners what their plans are for the weekend before listing big events happening in the coming days, including the Isle of Wight Festival.
The DJ said: “I’m not in tomorrow. I’m having Friday off. Because I’m going to university open days. I think the time is right for me to step away from broadcasting and go back into further education.
“No, I’m joking. I’m taking our youngest to open days around universities and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s an exciting time in life, and also I get to hold her hand.
“Do you know what I mean? Not necessarily on the campuses but walking around whatever town we’re going to. So sweet.”
Tess and Vernon also share eldest daughter Phoebe, who is 21.
It comes after Vernon was told off by a Radio 2 colleague as he made a comment about his home life.
The 52-year-old joked that he had made a “big mistake” for not noticing his producer Janine Maya-Smith’s new hair.
“Not one of you made the effort to say how nice it looks,” his colleague, whom he refers to as Janice-Janine, said on air after branding Vernon and the team “naughty boys”.
In an attempt to get back into her good books, Vernon told Janine: “You always look fabulous.”
The presenter admitted that he and his male co-stars “capitulated” after she slammed them for failing to comment on her new look.
Vernon then admitted his error: “I should’ve known, I live in a house full of ladies, do you know what I mean? I should’ve known. I apologise Janice, it was a rookie error, it was a big mistake Janice-Janine, you look fabulous, my love,” before praising her for keeping the team “together”.
Vernon and Tess announced their amicable split with a joint statement in May.
The pair and their daughters live in a six-bedroom home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, and it is not known whether either Tess or Vernon plan to move out.
