Vernon Kay has shared an emotional family milestone live on BBC Radio 2, admitting he could hardly believe how quickly time had passed as he marked a special occasion for one of his children.
The presenter, who is known for keeping listeners entertained during his mid-morning show, opened up to fellow broadcaster Sara Cox on Friday (October 16), revealing the reason his family had cause for celebration.
Vernon explained that it was a particularly significant day for his eldest daughter, prompting an affectionate exchange between the radio stars as they reflected on how quickly children grow up.
Speaking to Sara, he said: “It’s our eldest daughter’s birthday today.”
Sara immediately offered her congratulations before Vernon revealed just how old his daughter had turned.
“Phoebe’s 22,” he told her, prompting the BBC Radio 2 presenter to wish Phoebe a happy birthday.
Vernon was left reflecting on the passage of time, asking: “Where? Where has that time gone?”
Sara sympathised with her colleague, admitting she understood the feeling all too well. She then described the milestone as “Unbelievable,” as the pair discussed how quickly the years seem to pass.
The conversation turned to how Vernon might mark the occasion, with Sara asking whether he planned to take his daughter out to celebrate or whether she would be heading out with friends.
The presenter suggested there could be a celebratory drink or two on the cards, telling Sara: “Oh, we might be popping a cork or two.”
Sara encouraged him to enjoy the occasion before the pair exchanged warm wishes for the weekend.
Away from the radio studio, Vernon also paid tribute to Phoebe on social media, sharing a series of family photographs documenting her journey from childhood to adulthood.
Alongside the pictures, he wrote: “Happy Birthday PHOEBE KAY!!! 22 Time flies!! A joy watching you become the woman you are!”
The broadcaster has also recently shared a nostalgic moment with his daughter after the pair attended a Washington Commanders NFL game in the United States. Posting photographs from their outing, he drew attention to their shared sporting memories, writing: “Same sport same Washington Commanders years apart.”
Phoebe, the eldest of Vernon’s two daughters with fellow presenter Tess Daly, has also been spending time in New York City. Earlier this year, she offered a glimpse of her life across the Atlantic, sharing footage of her experiences in the Big Apple.
The collection prompted an emotional response from her mum, who commented: “Made me emotional watching this [heart emojis]. Mum xx.”
Vernon and Tess, who also share teenage daughter Amber, announced their separation in May after years together.
In a statement announcing the news, they said they “remain great friends and most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority”.
