Max Verstappen put in a brilliant comeback drive at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Dutchman started the race in 21st place and finished an impressive second. Although he had a strong opening phase, his start was not great.
Lewis Hamilton got off to a fantastic start and was in the points in no time. Verstappen seemed more cautious off the line. After the race, he admitted that his reaction at the start had not been great, meaning he could not immediately move up the field with Hamilton.

Verstappen eventually worked his way back into the points-paying positions fairly quickly. But because of a poor reaction, it took him a while to get up to speed: “To be honest, I had a very slow reaction time off the line because I was holding the clutch wrong. So I had to very quickly react, and then I was slow off the line. And so that was my mistake.”

After the start, Verstappen found his rhythm fairly quickly, although he did have some trouble with the traffic ahead of him at first. “But then I just got a bit unlucky in the first three corners where it was just like a traffic jam, like three or four cars in front blocking basically how much I could pass.”
The Dutchman saw Hamilton get away well and make it into the top 10 fairly quickly. “And actually, Lewis had a very good first lap, he could really get through those cars.” The Dutchman was frustrated by that. “I was a little bit disappointed that I couldn’t make the same headway.”

Once the Dutchman found the right rhythm, he cut through the field like a knife through butter. “But then within two laps, I was just flying by cars almost every corner. We had a lot more grip, I guess, than most in the midfield. I don’t know what lap I was in the top 10, but it just all happened actually very quickly.”
