Born on May 17, 1938, in Andhra Pradesh, Jamuna Rani began her singing career at the age of seven with the Telugu classic Tyagayya (1946). Over a career spanning nearly eight decades, she recorded more than 6,000 songs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Sinhalese, earning widespread recognition as one of South India’s most versatile playback singers.
By the age of 13, she was already singing for lead actresses, and she went on to deliver several memorable songs across South Indian cinema. She also made significant contributions to Sri Lankan cinema with her Sinhalese songs.
Some of the notable films in which she lent her voice include Drohi, Ratnamala, Laila Majnu, Chandirani, Devadasu, Alibaba 40 Dongalu, and Anna Thamudu, among many others. Her rich and expressive voice made her one of the most sought-after playback singers of the golden era of Indian cinema.
