Brooklyn Beckham’s name was trademarked by his parents ten years ago, but the Intellectual Property Office has notified Victoria that it’s up for renewal, more than a year since her son cut her off
Victoria Beckham has been asked to decide whether to keep the rights to her son Brooklyn’s name, following more than a year of complete estrangement. Brooklyn, 27, has spent the last year distancing himself from his family, having now totally cut his siblings and parents out of his life.
After a bombshell six-page Instagram rant in January, the hot sauce business owner has made it clear that he has no intention of getting back in touch with his family. But as his business-minded mum, Victoria, 51, applied to own the rights to his name in 2016, when he was just a teenager, the trademark is now up for renewal.
The UK government’s Intellectual Property Office charges a £245 fee for an application to retain a trademark, with Victoria being written to in June. A source close to the Beckhams told The Sun: “The original application was just a formality.
“Brooklyn has had control of his trademark since he turned 18. The paperwork is renewed periodically but it was only ever in the name of his parents because it was taken out when he was a minor.”
In the UK, having an IPO trademark means anyone who tries to make money out of the brand or person’s name can be faced with legal action. However, this is likely to cause further tension in the formerly close knit family, with Brooklyn accusing his parents of attempting to “force” him to sign away the rights to his name when he married wife Nicola Peltz.
Writing in January, part of Brooklyn’s scathing statement read: “I do not want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.
“For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family. The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into.”
He later added: “My parents have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding, and it hasn’t stopped. My mum cancelled making Nicola’s dress in the eleventh hour despite how excited she was to wear her design, forcing her to urgently find a new dress.
Weeks before our big day, my parents repeatedly pressured and attempted to bribe me into signing away the rights to my name, which would have affected me, my wife, and our future children.”
Sir David Beckham and his wife, Lady Victoria Beckham, have ignored Brooklyn’s demands. Brooklyn previously instructed his parents not to post about him, nor tag him in social media content. He has also cut ties with his brothers and sister, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and Harper, 14.
Brooklyn brutally instructed his parents to contact him only through his lawyers. Former footballer David recently declared that his family is his “proudest achievement” as he celebrated his wedding anniversary with Victoria. The retired football legend, 51, posted a collection of pictures alongside Lady Beckham spanning the years, including snaps from their wedding day and his 50th birthday bash last year.
