Chennai: Leaders of rival parties, M K Stalin of the DMK, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and leader of the opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay at different forums on various issues on Saturday
Stalin was speaking at the DMK’s women’s wing meeting when he said that Vijay was functioning as just a Xerox copy of the BJP and that he was stealing MLAs from the party that he had described as a ‘spent force’ (the AIADMK).
Stating that the new government could be given time to implement its poll promises but lapses in safety and security could not be tolerated, he said DMK would function as a responsible and aware opposition party.
He alleged that Vijay’s speech at the NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi was just a replication of the DMK’s demands during its tenure and the only change was that while the DMK fixed a target of becoming a US $ one trillion economy by 2030, the TVK government has revised it to a US $ 1.5 trillion economy by 2026.
Udhayanidhi Stalin said that Vijay was pasting stickers on the DMK’s achievements and showing them off as his. Despite travelling all the way to New Delhi, Vijay did not speak about the threat from Karnataka to build the Mekedatu dam across River Cauvery.
AIADMK general secretary Palaniswami also accused Vijay of watching passively the efforts being made by Karnataka to build the Mekedatu dam and said the TVK that gave respectability to the Congress by co opting its members in his Cabinet should put pressure on the Karnataka government to not build the dam that would affect the flow of Cauvery water into Tamil Nadu.
TVK government should also insist on Karnataka share the Cauvery water as per the Supreme Court orders, he said, regretting that the State government had made no efforts to release Cauvery water from the Mettur reservoir for irrigating crops raised in the Kuruvai season.
