Thoothukudi: A long-time fan of TVK president and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay allegedly attempted suicide in Thoothukudi after expressing anguish over the alleged sidelining of Vijay fans in the party’s organisational appointments.
‘Gilli’ Kumaran alias Muthukumaran, a van driver from Bhavani Nagar in Thoothukudi, has been a Vijay fan since 2000. He joined the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) after Vijay launched the party and had actively worked for it, including during the recent Assembly election in the Ottapidaram constituency.
Kumaran had been seeking a party post and had reportedly approached the party leadership and district-level functionaries several times, including through email. He had also written to Vijay seeking organisational posts for long-time fans, but claimed that there was no response.
As a last resort, on Monday night, Kumaran recorded a video in which he attempted suicide by consuming poison mixed with a soft drink. In the video message, which subsequently went viral, Kumaran said he had worked hard for the party’s victory with the expectation that Vijay would become Chief Minister and expressed happiness that his expectation had been fulfilled. He then alleged that long-time Vijay fans and party workers were being sidelined in Thoothukudi district, while organisational posts were being given to financially-influential persons and those who had joined the TVK from other parties, particularly the DMK.
On receiving the video, his friend Robin Raj rushed to Kumaran’s house and found him frothing in the mouth. He took Kumaran on a two-wheeler to the Thoothukudi government medical college hospital, where he is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit.
The incident has caused concern among TVK supporters in the district.
It may be recalled that, before the Assembly election, a woman TVK functionary in Thoothukudi had allegedly attempted suicide by consuming an overdose of sleeping pills, accusing the party of giving the district secretary’s post to a newcomer after receiving money. However, later, the woman quit the TVK and joined the DMK.
