Visakhapatnam: Narsipatnam rural police in Anakapalle district have seized 230 kg of dry ganja worth over ₹1.15 crore and arrested five persons who were allegedly transporting the contraband in a car near Gabbada village.

The arrested were identified as Sashi Kumar (52) of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, Pangi Subba Rao (21) of G. Madugula mandal in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, V. Chantibabu (27) from the same district, and Amal Raju and Manikandan Chandra Kumar, both natives of Tamil Nadu.

Police said Sashi Kumar allegedly procured ganja from areas along the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border and sold it in Chennai, Coimbatore and Thanjavur.

He was also suspected of supplying the drug to Sri Lanka at high prices.

According to police, Sashi Kumar and Chantibabu became acquainted at Pudukkottai district jail in 2024 and allegedly decided to enter the illegal trade after their release.

Sashi Kumar asked Chantibabu to arrange ganja from the ASR district.

Chantibabu allegedly contacted Pangi Subba Rao, and they procured 230 kg of ganja from Janthapai village in Odisha before storing it at Alagama village in G. Madugula mandal.

Sashi Kumar later arrived in the district with Amal Raju and Manikandan Chandra Kumar to collect the consignment.

Police intercepted the car and two pilot vehicles while the group was transporting the ganja towards Tuni in Kakinada district.

The contraband was seized, and a case has been registered.

Further investigation is under way.
