Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam City Traffic Police issued 2,568 e-challans during a special enforcement drive on May 3 to curb violations and improve road safety.

Officials said the rise in vehicles has led to frequent violations and accidents. Personnel were deployed at key junctions to monitor and penalise offenders under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Of the total cases, 1,268 were booked against riders not wearing helmets, while pillion riders accounted for 211 cases and 109 cases involved triple riding. Over-speeding detected through interceptor vehicles led to 300 cases, and 29 motorists were booked for using mobile phones while driving.

Seven cases were registered for driving without valid licences and six against minors operating vehicles. Wrong parking led to 73 cases, with 55 vehicles towed. Thirty-six motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, and 486 cases were filed for other violations. In all, 61 vehicles were seized.

In coordination with the Regional Transport Office, police inspected 10 private and RTC buses for compliance with safety norms. Officials said further action would be taken against bike racing, rash driving and use of modified silencers.
