Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam is set to add a new dimension to its tourism landscape with the proposed introduction of a night safari. The safari comprises an ambitious plan linking Kailasagiri, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), and the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS).

The night safari initiative is being spearheaded by the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA). It aims to position the city as an international tourist destination while balancing ecological conservation.

VMRDA commissioner N. Tej Bharath disclosed that proposals are being prepared in collaboration with Bengaluru-based consultancy firm Integrated Design. In the process, Kailasagiri, IGZP, and KWS will become part of a larger tourism circuit with enhanced recreational and visitor facilities.

At a meeting, the commissioner directed the consultants to prepare a detailed development report that reflects Visakhapatnam’s geographical strengths and tourism potential.

Highlighting the importance of environmental protection, Tej Bharath stressed that wildlife conservation in Kailasagiri, the Zoo Park, and Kambalakonda must remain central to the night safari project. He suggested examining the feasibility of the night safari, modelled on similar attractions worldwide, which would offer visitors a unique experience while ensuring ecological safeguards.

Integrated Design is expected to submit a comprehensive development report by the end of August. Representatives of Integrated Design are expected to work along with Singapore-based Mandai Global. They will present a preliminary report with their survey findings and recommendations.

Officials said their aim is not only to boost tourism but also provide modern facilities for visitors, creating opportunities for sustainable development. The inclusion of a night safari is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists, adding to Visakhapatnam’s appeal as a diverse destination.

Those who attended the meeting included VMRDA chief engineer Vinay Kumar, superintending engineer N. Rambabu, and deputy executive engineer Sirisha.
